A brand new release from our favorite Indigenous punkers, 1876.
Punk’s not dead—it’s evolving. And 1876 is leading the charge. Their new EP Pow Wow Punk Rock IIII is proof. It’s a full-blown expedition through sound, spirit, and rebellion—and it hooked us fast. We won’t pretend we weren’t already deep in the 1876 camp. Their 2020 Pow Wow Punk EP is certified Up the Punx gold.
In a genre where too many records blur into one long track, 1876 refuses to play it safe. They stretch punk’s boundaries without ever losing the thread. This EP is a genre-hopping, spirit-shaking ride:
• Haahp’e’hahe kicks things off with melodic hardcore that hits like a Fat Wreck memory and a gut punch. The chorus—“we won’t be silent!”—lands hard, backed by gang vocals from David Rodriguez (The Casualties, Starving Wolves, Krum Bums), Cinnamon Killsfirst, Jesse DesRosier, and Sober Junkie.
• Dancing on the Enemy slides into ska territory, complete with horns from Hans Gruber & The Diehards—pure bounce and bite. Dig that trademark jingle dress.
• Braids in the Pit is a clear call to action: start a circle pit wherever you are. Anthemic skate punk with heart and fury—you’ll be singing along on first listen.
• Lights slows it down with vulnerable alt-country vibes that feel like a late-night confession. Might just be our favorite track on the EP.
• CTYNDN II (feat. Wyzaker, Kunu, Mista Chief) blends rap over dubby ska beats—genre fusion done right. That Indigenous chorus? So good.
• 49er? I Barely Knew Her closes with raw acapella chants over pow wow drums—no guitars needed, just soul.
This record succeeds on all levels. It’s fun in the way punk should be. It’s personal, it’s eye-opening, and it blends genres that rarely share the same stage. Above all, it’s simply great – raw, intentional, and impossible to ignore.
Back in the day, the big sexy secret was that 1876 was Gabe Colhoff’s solo project. Now? The full band’s here, and the chemistry is undeniable. We caught their first SoCal show a few months back, and they were just as electric live—joyful chaos with precision and heart.
So don’t sleep. Grab this EP ASAP. Dig into those earlier Pow Wow Punk Rock releases. And if you know what’s good for you, catch 1876 live when they hit the road with Subhumans on their US tour this October.
